yes ive been using windows for 10 years (since windows me) and i have to admit its pretty unstable. I've always been drooling over the macs but i find them too overpriced. So i decided to build myself a hackintosh on my dell inspiron 1525. WOW! I have drivers for everything, so i have ethernet, wifi, internal webcam, usb, firewire, sound, internal mic and sd card reader working on a fake mac. I can run my photoshop, my xcode, ilife and the rest. Then one day i discovered linux. Now my pc dual boots ubuntu and osx leopard 10.5.7 fine and there is no trace of bill gates on my pc ^_^

P.S jailbreak your iOS device for administration, terminal access, file transfer, themes, and free apps :-p

Still using it. In fact, writing this from that very Mac. Purchasing this machine was one of the single best decisions I ever made when it came to computing. The only thing I regret is not having done it sooner.

Since then, I've recommended a MacBook to just about anyone looking for a new laptop who isn't happy with their current experience, whatever it may be.

That said, I won't touch the iPhone OS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Way too restrictive. OS X offers the perfect balance between a GUI that just lets you work and be productive out of the box, and a powerful machine you can dig into (if you're into the command line thing). Would I go back? If I had to, I could, although I'd miss some of the tools I have available to me, like Handbrake, Mars Edit, OmmWriter, iPhoto, and--most importantly--Scrivener. Sure, there are equivalents for these in the Windows and Linux worlds, but one thing that can't be denied with Apple is that they've created a culture of polished products, and that's what you'll very often get.

My recommendation: If you want a Mac, get one. You very probably won't regret it.

(Edit: I didn't answer the question "What do I miss?" Mostly, the FOSS culture, which I rather enjoyed. From a user POV, I miss a lot of the customizability, something unmatched in OS X or Microsoft. The polish of the Mac, however, makes up for it.)

Now that more than two years have passed, are you still using a mac? Do you regret buying one? I'm pretty much in the position you were two years ago :)

What do you miss?

Not really. Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD. Pretty much anything you can do with Linux (administratively) you can do with OS X.

I have never used a mac, but I use Ubuntu (and Opera too :) ) and I have heard that there are more things you can do in Ubuntu (and Linux in general) when it comes to system administration and Terminal stuff. Is this true?

Nice sentence.

"But I what I expect to happen and what will happen may end up being two totally different things."

That sentence really made a lot of sense. Not!

(Well, I will admit to the guilty pleasure that is the Opera browser.

You could be proud of using Opera even though we're not open source. :)
