"I think what happened in Carrollwood is incursion of thugs from the Town-n-Country area."
-
Well, TNC isn't ALL that bad, really, but I know what you mean. Then again, I used to live between Leto HS and Crestwood Elementary (walking distance from both), then right by Webb (somewhat better area). When I first saw the area all I had as a point of reference was Puerto Rico and all I remember thinking was "wow... it's so clean." For the most part, that whole area is, and it's not badly designed (most of it), but the whole ghetto element in the area really bothered me. Going back there now, though, it's a different story. The area isn't quite as bad as, say, North Lauderdale, but doesn't look all that much better. (Looks a bit like central Davie, for anyone who's been around here.)
-
As for Carrollwood, I have noticed it declining in the past few years, but never really noticed it going down quite that badly.
-
As for Zephyrhills -- if it wasn't because of my industry (tech/writing), Zephyrhills wouldn't make for a bad option, from what you describe. So long as there are horses around, The Wife'll be happy (Thank You, Davie Town Charter). After this conversation I may just start looking for land in that area, or maybe just a nice townhome to rent out. (It makes for a good way to keep my options open.) What do real eastate prices look like over there? (2-3 bedroom house or townhome in a relatively good area.)

Gnorb, I'm originally from Brandon so Fishhawk doesn't appeal to me at all. I think what happened in Carrollwood is incursion of thugs from the Town-n-Country area. Right now I'm at a condo conversion called The Pinnacle and it's like living in the ghetto...and I don't mean anything color-related, even the white folks are ghetto--they leave trash on the ground outside their cars, break through the "limited access" barriers weekly and generally live as though no one else lives here.
Now, Zephyrhills... You may laugh but we lived there for 5 years and loved almost every minute. Nobody there cared that we were gay, our closeset neighbors were 5 acres away, Tampa was pretty close for shopping, groceries were 'way cheaper and it was really pretty where we were (just S of Dade City, where we also lived for about 20 minutes-that's another whole story). It's kinda country but for a suburban gal like me it was just about right.

Junior: I totally agree. It's all about finding somewhere where you'll be happy. As for me, I'm not a big city fan. In fact, I'd take a farm 20 miles from anywhere over, say, downtown Miami any day. (Which I guess is why I like living next to the Everglades, giant alligator eating pythons and all.) That said, The Wife's a bit more of a suburbanite. While she doesn't mind big cities (she loves NY, it creeps me out), and she loves farms, she doesn't exactly like the idea of being out in the middle of nowhere. The happy medium for us, of course, is a place like Plantation/Weston, where we're in civilization, but can escape it whenever we need to. (I love driving accross the 'glades.)
-
Sandy: Thanks for the warning about Asheville. I didn't quite realize the seething hatred. All NC had always been so... nice. (Except for Greensboro, which while having absolutely GORGEOUS outlying areas, the city itself looks like it was put through a "Town Uglification" meant to discourage newcomers and confuse everyone with its insane system of roads. In fact, I should really tell you about the time we got lost in Greensboro, on Hillpoint Avenue, went through Hillpoint Court, Hillpoint Street, Hillpoint Terrace, Hillpoint Circle, and Hillpoint Boulevard, just to end up in a dinky little town called Hillpoint.)
-
As for Carrollwood, I guess maybe all my memories of it are stuck in the mid-90's when Carrollwood was *the* place to be. Now the subdivision of Plantation overthere (near Nixon/Linebaugh/Gunn) -- that was an area full of thug-wannabes'... thugabees I guess you'd call 'em. I can see myself wanting to inch over toward Westchase (with its never ending rules, regulations, and fees, but nice townhomes), or the area around Citrus Park mall, which I find rather nice. (Or, to go to another extreme, Fishhawk, with its bajillion dollar homes, middle-of-nowhere-but-not-really feel and its generally aloof populace.)
-
That said, we'll stick to FTL for the next year or so and see where we're at, then. (No matter how emotionally attached I may be to TPA, right now's just not the time to move.)

I just moved back to Tampa (out of sheer necessity or idiocy, I don't remember which) from living up in Pasco county for a while. I live in Carrollwood and the comments from "Bill" about Scotsdale pretty well reflect the attitude of people here. Carrollwood USED to be nice, now it's for rent to people who lack class, couth or manners.
On the other hand, I lived in Asheville and it's a fabulous place...except for the fact that they absolutely hate Floridians there, no kidding. They'll be happy to tell you why, too. Apparently the obnoxious wealthy people from Carrollwood who rent out their homes to the wrong people build huge escape homes on the ridgelines of the mountains, which North Carolinians in general hate.
Personally, I like Ft. Lauderdale (expensive though it is) and my partner and I have also been tossing around the Orlando option (she's a Disney employee and Orlando simply throws benefits their way). We just can't stand all the people! I feel like that one personality Sybil had, the one who covered her ears and cowered while moaning, "The people, the people, the people..."

So long as you live where you guys are happiest, thats all anyone can really ask for right now.

However i got to agree with the guy who suggested various categories for the best place to live.

I mean someone who loves the new york nightlife may not find a small town surrounded by mountains appealing.
