August. September. October. November. December. Everything I remember about 1989 took place during these months. As for what happened before then I really don’t remember, so I couldn’t tell you. In any case, it is unimportant to our story, except to say that it wasn’t brown. I was, however, coming out of a dark age, which is a strange thing to say, considering I was nine years old at the time. But after years defined by light and dark, finally the world began to be defined by color. One color.

It’s Sunday. I spent all day yesterday either out, or watching my Stargate SG-1 DVDs. I expected to be writing, catching up on my NaNoWriMo novel, which got set back this week by a few things, but instead decided to–well, I haven’t decided anything yet.
But the story? It’s sucking. Hard. Maybe you can help me out here?

In case you didn’t know, November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for short). It’s when thousands of would-be novelists and actual novelists pledge themselves to constructing and writing a 50,000+ word novel in 30 days. (That, by the way, is about 1650 words a day, every day, for the entire month.) This year, among those thousands of would-be novelists is me. Surprise, surprise.

As I look out my window this morning, I see the conservation area just behind the lot that makes up my back yard. Beside the house is a giant lump of dirt, taking up space where one day another house will be. And I can’t help but think that it doesn’t feel like Halloween anymore. Hasn’t for a long time.
