Any Parents in the Audience? A Favor, If You Please

Topic(s): Books

To clarify, this message aimed at is all of the parents (or about-to-be-parents) who read this blog (not just at my parents). Also, if you’re not a parent, or about to be one, you’ll probably want to forgo this, although you’ll probably at least want to forward it to someone who falls into one of the aforementioned categories.

Here’s the lowdown: My friend Melissa (Little Woolgatherings) is writing a book and she needs your help.

The following are some points that stood out to me while reading How to Get Rich, by Donald Trump, listed here by chapter. I’ve bolded both chapter titles (which are lessons in themselves) and extremely important points within the quotes. I’ve also added some personal observations in [brackets].

Myst: The Book of Atrus, is the first novel in the Myst series of books, which expands on the universe used in UbiSoft’s Myst series. In this piece I will be giving a short synopsis of the book as well as do an overall review. (Warning: Some spoilers! If you don’t want to read the book, or have already read it, keep reading, otherwise skip down to the conclusion.)The games have made for one of the most successful game franchises of all time, but the question remains as to whether this novel can engage the reader in the same fashion.

I [Heart] Books

Topic(s): Books

I’m a bookworm. I loooooove books, which is one of the reasons my first few jobs were in bookstores. I loved being surrounded by books. Loved it then; love it even more now.

I’m in the middle of moving a few bookshelves around, so to make the job easier I decided to stack all my books in one place. The following photo is of part of the stack I made, and comprises about 3/4 of my entire book collection.

my big fat stack of books

There are three and a quarter rows of books, each comprised of four to five columns, each about two and a half feet high. There are a lot of books in that pile, and another bookcase-full, to boot. (And, yes, that is a soda can on top of one of the piles in the back.) There are books int there on writing, poetry, resume writing, fantasy, sci-fi, Dungeons and Dragons, astronomy, self improvement, finance, leadership, comics, theology, philosophy, psychology, auto-biographies, history, cooking, computers, Linux — and that’s just what can see right now, as I write this. (The stack is behind me.)

And yes, I’ve read most of them. (Too many of those deserve a deeper study, however.)

Now, here’s some food for thought: when I moved to Fort Lauderdale, I gave half of my books away, and when I moved again about 2 years ago, I gave half again. I’ve reconstituted a good portion of the collection, but I still have a bit of a way to go. On the bright side, this time around most of the books are fairly light, and much smaller. (Most of my books before were softcover, but large and usually heavy.)

I love my books.
