A few days ago I started reading Sir Thomas Malory’s book Le Morte D’Arthur. After a few hours, I stopped. In that time I made the following observations, which should explain why I stopped:

A pencil and paper.
How many of us have actually picked up a pencil — on purpose, and not because there wasn’t a working pen around or because it was the first suitable writing utensil in the vicinity — in order to actually enjoy the art of writing?

The following is a fragment of a memory imparted to me by The Wife recently which, try as I may, I can’t quite think of a proper introduction for, but which involves a kid coming to the frightening realization that adults — at least the people upstairs — are really just kids in really big bodies.
As she came back home from some last minute Christmas shopping, The Wife bumped into the 8 year old girl living in the apartment below ours. When the girl noticed the package my wife was carrying — a boxed set of the video game Dance Dance Revolution Extreme — she said (rather loudly, from what I’m told), “Cool! DDR! Who’s getting that?!”
“My 27 year old husband,” The Wife answered.
The girl’s expression went flat, and she looked at The Wife like she’d suddenly spawned a second head.

I went to the dentist today. I’ve been there a lot recently, seeing as I hadn’t gone for a while. It turns out I have more than a little work to get done. This time around I was taking care of a couple of evil cavities gnawing away at my molars.
When I was brought in to the… uhm.. operating room (I guess), I was told to sit in the oft dreaded dentist’s chair. As usual, the dentist was off finishing another appointment, so I had a few minutes to contemplate not only the impending pain-staking experience, but also also to get bored. Normally, I find the controller for the operating chair, lay it back, and make myself comfortable. (Might as well take a nap while I wait, right?) This time around the chair was turned off, which meant I was stuck in the quasi-upright position the chair defaults to, or as I like to call it, the most uncomfortable position for a chair possible.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Oh the shame to come.
That’s right folks, it happened again. Somehow I was dragged out to the place I least enjoy yet find myself visiting the most. The mall.
Now I know that there are a lot of events going on in the world today such as the passing of a great former president and the execution of a foreign dictator. It almost seems kind of trivial and a little irresponsible to ignore this groundbreaking news to write about something so…average.
However I believe that the world will get enough coverage on these topics without my commenting upon it. There are a lot of better informed people who could talk endlessly about the facts and opinions regarding these events so they would be the ones to seek out for articles relating to these topics.
Do I choose to ignore theses occurrences? No, but I am twenty years old and the world looks like its falling apart in front of me. All I want for a few weeks during my winter break is to enjoy these magic moments with those who matter the most to me. My friends and family. No matter what insanity is going on the world, no matter what depressing news comes your way, there is always someone in your family who can lift your spirits and remind you that in the end, everything will be just fine.
Anyway, back to the point of this article.
